Shandong University was founded in 1901, in the home province of Confucius as the first modern public university outside the capital city, Beijing. As one of the largest and oldest comprehensive key
universities in China, it comes under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. For the hundred years since its foundation, Shandong University has been playing an important role in the education of
outstanding students. Many of these students have gone on to become leaders of their professions.
The university covers an area of over 380 hectares with 1.07 million square meters of floorage, with five campuses in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, and one branch campus in Weihai, a scenic coastal city.
In its 29 schools, the university maintains 9 research stations for post-doctoral programs and offers 74 doctoral programs, 155 master programs, 100 undergraduate majors, and 21 diploma majors in nine fields, namely literature, history, philosophy, law, sciences, engineering, medicine, economics, management, in which 32 disciplines are national, provincial or ministerial key ones. It treasures 2918 professors and associate professors. There are 32,000 full-time students on campus, including 3,700 graduate students and 300 international students. Additionally, over 23,000 students are studying under continuing education programs. 43 kinds of scholarships are available to students of outstanding academic ability. The libraries house more than 3.55 million volumes of books.
Shandong University is known for its achievements in academic research. The teaching, research and service carried out by the university has made major contributions to the development of Shandong Province, and to the country as a whole, in education, science and culture. The number of theses published in SCI has been ranking the top ten among the Chinese universities for the last ten years. The Crystal Materials Institute and Microbiology Lab are the 2 national key labs. Colloid & Interface Chemistry Institute, Lab of Liquid Structure & Heredity of Materials, Otolaryngology Institute and Institute of Health Economics & Policy are listed as the 4 ministerial key labs. Another 14 key labs of ShandongProvince, 3 national key research bases for humanistic & social sciences and 2 provincial key research bases for social sciences also find home at Shandong University. Besides these, the University has three affiliated hospitals.
It has also established "sister university" relationships with over 50 universities worldwide, resulting in many exchange programs, research collaborations and other forms of mutually beneficial cooperation.
